An environmental studies project begins with a variety of plants taking root on an otherwise lifeless roof

This summer, Allyssa Decker, assistant professor of environmental studies, installed a green roof on top of Tome Hall, starting with a variety of plants and soils.

Working alongside her student, Riley Kuehn '23 (environmental science), and others, Decker says that this pilot project is not only a sustainability feature but a living laboratory to determine what plants and soils work well together in the Carlisle area. And she hopes the idea catches on.

“I’m hoping this is a good way to get people talking about green roofs on campus,” says Decker, “and that we can have more of our buildings have little ecosystems growing on top of them.”
