How has Dickinson prepared you for life after graduation?

My experiences in and out of the classroom prepared me for post-grad life. In the classroom, I was able to gain new perspectives through the liberal arts curriculum as well as learn how to build meaningful relationships. Being on the field hockey team taught me how to communicate, work hard and be a team player.

What are you most anticipating about your career or post-graduate pursuits?

I am excited to be in a new environment, meet new people and learn from others. I'm looking forward to being kept on my toes and being part of a great culture.

How has Dickinson prepared you for life after graduation?

Dickinson has prepared me for life after graduation by providing me the skills necessary to achieve my goals of living and working in a foreign country: language. Before going to Dickinson, I had basic formal language study in only French and Spanish from high school. Coming to Dickinson in the fall of 2017, I was so excited by all the languages that the college offered, so much so that I took two language courses a semester for my first two years. Small class sizes, the presence of international students, study abroad programs and incredibly devoted, caring professors all contributed to my linguistic development in French, Portuguese, Japanese and especially German. I spoke little to no German during my first year. Now, after my Dickinson education, I have nearly reached fluency.

What are you most anticipating about your career or post-graduate pursuits?

I anticipate using my linguistic skills that I developed while at Dickinson to live and work around the world.

How has Dickinson prepared you for life after graduation?

Dickinson has given me the tools necessary to be confident in my abilities, through four years of practice and hard work.

What are you most anticipating about your career or post-graduate pursuits?

I am excited to continue creating art and I look forward to seeing how my work shifts outside the scope of academia, with the comfort of knowing I’ll be able to reach out to my professors to get their feedback and support.

What are some of the defining moments of your Dickinson experience?

Working at the Clarke Forum for Contemporary Issues was probably the most valuable thing I did while at Dickinson. The skills I learned while working there will be essential to me for the rest of my life, and it’s rare to have gotten so many professional experiences so early on in my career. I am comfortable with public speaking, professional writing and high-stakes social interactions now because of the Clarke Forum. It was the perfect addition to my academic progress while at Dickinson.

How has Dickinson prepared you for life after graduation?

I think Dickinson allowed me to realize the importance of place and space. Growing up in central Pennsylvania, I was unsure as a first-year student that this is where I needed to be. Being a part of organizations like MANdatory, Sigma Lambda Beta and Student Senate has given me the space to meet people like me and feel that I belong at this college. It's been an honor to hold different positions and learn how to share my perpective in various ways. I'm grateful for several opportunities to learn through the college archives, whether it was understanding the narratives of people of color in Dickinson's history or the LGBTQIA+ community in the area. I feel inspired to pursue archival materials and underrepresented narratives as I continue to grow as an artist beyond my time here.

What are you most anticipating about your career or post-graduate pursuits?

I most anticipate the opportunity to design art projects and curriculum grounded in diverse perspectives to create a learning environment that is more reflective of the communities students are a part of. I've been able to develop my own artistic processes at Dickinson, and I'm excited to make the shift to other locations and wider audieces.

What are some of the defining moments of your Dickinson experience?

A defining moment for me was taking Portuguese in my second semester. I didn't plan to start learning another language, but it's opened many doors, and I've gained a deeper understanding of Latin America and the southern hemisphere because of it. I am inspired by how powerful and affirming my Portuguese classrooms and teachers have been, and I hope to bring that energy to my career every day.

Internship Experience

In the summer of 2020, I worked as the student orientation director for the Office of Student Leadership & Campus Engagement. I worked to welcome incoming students to the college by creating a series of virtual summer programming, completing administrative tasks and assisting with the planning and implementation of new student Orientation online.
