Sarah Clancy ’20

Sarah Clancy ’20 is an international business & management major who’s excited to make a mark in the business and marketing world. A co-captain of the Dickinson Equestrian Team, she was regional champion in intermediate fences last spring. With leadership positions in her sorority, on the equestrian team and with the campus recreation department as well as coursework providing hands-on international marketing experience, she's preparing to become a business leader and serve as a mentor for future women in business.

Hometown:

Holliston, Massachusetts.

Major:

International business & management.

Clubs and organizations:

Equestrian Club (co-captain), Delta Nu, Sports Club and Campus Recreation (student coordinator).

Honors/scholarships/awards:

Joan Johnson Leadership Award, through the Intercollegiate Horse Show Association (IHSA).

Favorite book:

To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee.

Favorite movie:

Monsters, Inc.

On choosing a major:

The business world needs more women in leadership positions. Throughout my experience at Dickinson I have held leadership positions in my sorority, on the equestrian team and at my job in the campus recreation department. These experiences have given me the opportunity to facilitate change—big and small—and to further develop my leadership skills. I am thrilled to be a business major, to gain more knowledge and experience at Dickinson and to become a mentor in the business world for more women in the future.

On choosing Dickinson:

There were several reasons! The emphasis on sustainability, the opportunities for leadership and the support from faculty and staff. Not to mention the beautiful campus; that was certainly a selling point too.

However, something that stood out to me on my tour was that my guide knew the school had an equestrian team. Riding has been a huge part of my life and something that I have had every intention of continuing during college. Once I met the team and our coach, Lindsay, who has become so much more than that to me, I knew I made the right choice.

Favorite place on campus:

The Underground.

Favorite Dining Hall food:

Chocolate cupcakes with peanut butter frosting!

Favorite class/learning experience:

My favorite class so far has been Marketing in a Global Context with Visiting Lecturer in International Business & Management Sherry Ritchey. In this class, we learned a lot more about the research side of marketing and came up with plans to market a product in a specific country. Additionally, we had individual projects researching a company of our choice and analyzing their marketing strategies. This class helped me realize that market research is something I really like and am considering for work after graduation!

If I could have dinner with anyone, living or dead, it would be …

Easy. Ruth Bader Ginsburg.

Most important thing I’ve learned so far:

Your grades are not the only things that define you. Get involved, meet different people and be a leader. There are endless learning experiences outside the classroom too!

Proudest accomplishment:

Raising over $14,000 for a fellow member of the Intercollegiate Horse Show Association (IHSA) who was diagnosed with bone cancer during her junior year of school at Mount Holyoke College.

Biggest influence in my life:

My grandfather on my mom’s side. Between running the family farm and his own electric company, he taught the rest of us that hard work pays off and about the importance of honesty in every aspect of life. He was a humble, passionate and kind man that will forever influence my life!
