Students on campus

Your gifts supporting Dickinson don't just make a difference--they make the difference. Gifts supporting scholarships help the college provide nearly $40 million in financial aid and scholarships each year, making the difference between the college's being affordable or out of reach for half our students.

How has Dickinson prepared you for your future?

It has given me more tools and people to further enhance my professional experience post graduation.

Internship Experience

This last semester, I interned at the Cumberland County Prison. I was exposed to many different areas of the prison but focused on security policies, legality behind the use of force and handling of inmates. I spent much of my time serving and engaging with correctional officers while learning how they perform their job every day in a high-stress environment.

What are some of the defining moments of your Dickinson experience?

Studying abroad in Denmark, Copenhagen. This experience really challenged me to be open and understand new cultures and practices outside the United States. It also gave me time to travel the world, learn more about myself as a person and embrace a whole new experience of being a student.

Samantha Miller

law & policy

Major: law & policy
Hometown: Bronx, New York
Employer: Miller Enterprise Marketing Agency (self-employed)
Job title: owner/entrepreneur

Job Responsibilities

My marketing agency, Miller Enterprise Marketing Agency in New York City, focuses on small businesses' marketing efforts, providing consultations, information and techniques to increase brand awareness and sales through social media, and direct and indirect marketing strategies.

How has Dickinson prepared you for your future?

Dickinson has allowed me to find my true passion. Through working with the Career Center and attending info sessions with Phil Jones, I applied to different internships my sophomore year and was offered a great internship at Allure Marketing Concepts in NYC. Interning at Allure for two years opened my eyes to the endless possibilities of marketing, I was introduced to top executives, business owners and millionaires who all inspired me to take those risks that others wouldn't in order to live the lives they won't, and that advice has stuck with me to this day. Since my internship, in conjunction with my Intro to Business course with Professor [Visiting Instructor in International Business and Management Sherry] Ritchey and conversations with my academic advisor, college mentors, my dean and friends, I've decided to follow my dreams of entrepreneurship. If it were not for my career advice counselling, Dickinson alums, Dickinson connections (Don Nagle '76 and Jim Chambers '78) the encouraging words of professors and mentors I would never have been introduced to the business world, and without the lessons by Professor Ritchey, I wouldn't be ready for life beyond the limestone walls, but since I have had that opportunity, I can say that Dickinson has prepared me for life beyond the limestone.

Internship Experience

I interned at Allure Marketing Concepts in Manhattan, New York (July 2016-December 2017) as an account manager and direct marketing representative for Fortune 500 Companies (Time Warner Business Class, PetFirst, PupJoy).

What are you most anticipating about your future?

I am excited about starting my own business, the ability to take a vison and make it a reality, to have something to call my own as a recent college graduate.

What are some of the defining moments of your Dickinson experience?

I have so many memorable moments! My most memorable moment would have to be spending Thanksgiving my first year with Tara Vasold Fischer '02 and Keith Fischer '02. I chose this example because it was at this moment that I realized what the truest of love and Dickinson family was. Tara and Keith have been an instrumental piece to my Dickinson experience and the reason I am still here. They've showed me such love, care, support and encouragement; they are the reason I love Dickinson so much.

Coulter Chute

Major: law & policy
Hometown: Beverly, Massachusetts
Employer: Manchester-by-the-Sea Police Department
Job title: dispatcher

Job Responsibilities

  • Receive, field, prioritize 911 and regular business line telephone calls.
  • Maintain contact with and dispatch police and fire units for most call types.
  • Check records in national, local and departmental databases.
  • Issue alerts and Be On the Lookout (BOLO) calls for neighboring local and state agencies.

How has Dickinson prepared you for the future?

The broad spectrum of courses I have taken throughout the law & policy major ultimately have resulted in me taking a closer look at certain aspects of my social and professional lives, as well as being able to break down and empathize with opinions and beliefs with which I may not agree.

Internship Experience

In 2016, I interned with the Massachusetts State Police. I spent 10 weeks working with several different specialty units, specifically the K-9 Unit, Marine Unit, STOP Team and the Underwater Recovery Team. For the Marine Unit, I served as a note-taker and assistant for the unit lieutenant, specifically with notes and meetings with federal, local and state law-enforcement agencies in reference to the upcoming event Sail Boston. With the K-9 Team, I spent many days and hours organizing statistics for individual troopers' activity throughout the year.

What are you most anticipating about your future?

I'm most anticipating and most excited for getting into a career field that I truly enjoy. It's all I've ever wanted to do. I start the police academy June 23, and I will be graduating as a police officer sometime in late December.

What are some of the defining moments of your Dickinson experience?

My first tour at Dickinson as a high school senior. My then college counselor recommended I check out Dickinson, as it had everything I thought I was looking for. From the moment I stepped on campus, I knew that it was the place for me. Between the inclusiveness, the beauty of the campus and the astounding friendliness of every single person I walked by, I was truly amazed and immediately fell in love.
