How has Dickinson prepared you for your future?

Dickinson has prepared me to think critically about the issues around me. It has taught me to consider multiple aspects of an issue and has provided me with the tools to solve it from many angles.

What are you most anticipating about your future?

I am excited to connect with prominent researchers in my field of interest and gain more experience before moving on to more schooling.

What are some of the defining moments of your Dickinson experience?

I think all of the community service opportunities I have been involved in during my time at Dickinson have been really defining for me. They were ways that I could connect with the community around me while creating lasting change.

How has Dickinson prepared you for your future?

Dickinson's liberal-arts education has truly influenced me and had an impact on my future direction. Not only through taking classes outside of my major, but through the school's passion and enthusiasm for entwining sustainability, social justice and global awareness into everything I've done at Dickinson. I have received an excellent education, but more than the knowledge, I have been given the opportunity to learn how to engage and participate in tough issues, ask hard questions and apply concepts across disciplines. My eyes have been opened to new people, new opinions, new methods and new cultures more than I thought possible, and has expanded my worldview. These experiences have given me tremendous confidence in who I am moving forward.

Internship Experience

  • Nursing assistant (volunteer): GBMC Hospital, Towson, Maryland - summer 2017
  • Intern: Sadler Health Center, Carlisle, Pennsylvania - spring 2018

What are some of the defining moments of your Dickinson experience?

My most memorable and defining moments were the ones in which I was challenged and pushed beyond my comfort zone. One of these experiences was the community service aspect of Spanish for the Health Professions class. As part of the course, I shadowed nurses in Adams County and interpreted for migrant workers. Another involved my Health Studies Senior Seminar, during which we learned about the U.S. healthcare system and interviewed Medicaid patients at Sadler Health Center. Both of these classes allowed me to apply concepts to real world applications. I have also greatly appreciated exposure to Clarke Forum lectures, Rush Hour talks and other discussions that have taught me about complex topics that I would be too intimidated to research on my own. For instance, I got to hear from a lead researcher of the geothermal activity at Yellowstone National Park, got to hear from former astronaut Mae Jamison, and got to learn about new treatment approaches for Alzheimer's by lead researcher Dr. Dale Bredesen. Access to brilliant researchers and leaders in their fields has been inspiring and a vital part of my Dickinson education.
