With three application deadlines down and one to go (Regular Decision on Feb. 1), and with applications tracking ahead of last year, admissions counselors are getting to know some impressive future Dickinsonians.

Inspired by the students already admitted through Early Decision, the counselors have compiled a list of 20 notables (which could have been much longer!). They include:

  • the designer and developer of a prototype gravity-powered light
  • winner of the J. Howard Wert Award for Civil War Scholarship, who has published nine books
  • co-founder of a clothing company, Bahama Llama, whose motto is “made for college students, by college students, on a college student’s budget”
  • and one of two high-school students serving as a representative for the Kentucky Student Environmental Coalition.

Also among the newcomers are a scholar who traveled to Alaska with a National Geographic photographer, an award-winning baker, volunteers building houses in Tanzania and supporting multicultural families in Korea and performers who have taken center stage at a Baltimore Orioles game, the Rose Bowl and Sesame Place.

In August, these incoming students will join an impressive student body at Dickinson that includes an earth sciences and environmental sciences double major whose research was featured by NASA; winner of a prestigious DAAD (German Academic Exchange Service) scholarship; the winners of the first Innovation Competition @ Dickinson; founding editor of Dickinson Science Magazine; recipient of the 2015 Campus Sustainability Champion award from the Pennsylvania Environmental Resource Consortium; one of 36 people chosen to participate in Core18 Leaders Lab, a fellowship program for Jewish social entrepreneurs; and a guest of President Barack Obama during his 2014 State of the Union address.
