Whether you have studied Italian for years or have never taken an Italian class, you can make Italian part of your Dickinson experience. No previous knowledge of Italian is required. In fact, many of our majors and minors begin with ITAL 101 after arriving at Dickinson.
Italian Studies combines language learning with the interdisciplinary study of Italian culture, literature, film, history, politics and contemporary society. Students can major or minor in Italian Studies, connect Italian with another academic interest, study in Bologna, pursue internships and community-engagement opportunities, and participate in Italian cultural activities on campus.

Start Italian from the Beginning
Never studied Italian before? You are not alone. Many Dickinson students begin with ITAL 101 and progress through the program with the support of faculty members who get to know them well. Students who have previously studied Italian or speak it at home can take a placement exam to determine the best course for them.

Italian Studies is designed to work across the liberal arts. Students can connect Italian with interests such as history, art history, film and media studies, food studies, international business, international studies, political science and European studies. Many students combine Italian with another major or minor, creating an academic path that reflects their individual goals.

Live and Study in Bologna
In Bologna, Italian becomes part of everyday life. Students take courses at the Dickinson Center and the University of Bologna, pursue internships and community-engagement opportunities, and live alongside Italian and Italian-speaking students. Students can spend a semester or the full academic year in one of Europe’s most vibrant university cities while continuing to make progress in Italian and their other academic programs.
Use Italian Beyond the Classroom
Students practice Italian and experience Italian culture through the Italian Club, Casa italiana, conversation opportunities, visiting speakers, films, workshops and cultural events. Activities such as pasta making, bocce, Italian trivia, art workshops and informal gatherings allow students to build friendships and use Italian in relaxed, welcoming settings.

Italian develops communication skills, cultural knowledge and the ability to navigate different perspectives. Our graduates have taken these skills into fields including education, law, international business, finance, marketing, public service and the arts.
