Bulk Mail Technician

Phone: 717-245-1306

Our soulful and grounded anchor of the team. If a task seems impossible, Nancy’s can-do brain will either conquer it effortlessly or stubbornly reverse-engineer a way to make it happen. We don't actually know what it is that Nancy does, as she has her own side of the Print Center office all to herself with mysterious machines and stamps. She will disappear for some time each day with large totes labeled USPS which we have assumed has to do with mailing. As a recent transplant to Pennsylvania and the Print Center, she sees our magical chaos as charming and a model for anti-capitalist feminist leadership.

Nancy is a free-spirited yogini who absolutely hates shoes, though she begrudgingly understands their necessity in a four-season state because she has an equal vehemence for cold toes. As our resident pillar of health and wisdom, she crushes her menopausal morning workouts and drinks way more than the recommended daily amount of water, proving that balance is everything. Nancy's three adult children may or may not agree with the above characterization of their mother.

General Production Tech

Phone: 717-245-1306

Jedd is the Michelangelo of paper cuts and the absolute pinnacle of technical skill in the Print Center. He operates our chaotic bindery bottleneck with the pure, chimney-sweeping magic of Dick Van Dyke in Mary Poppins, seamlessly turning giant reams of paper into beautifully bound masterpieces. He has the most repaired bones in the PC family. He has performed in circuses, Wild West shows, and at the Apple store as a genius. His current interest in the intersection of podcasts with real history allows him to regale us all with his newly acquired fun facts daily. Jedd is humble, kind, and a recent convert to cat loving. He is a single, sober Carlislian who loves his mother, two grown offspring, Sci-Fi and giraffes.

Amanda (#2) is the glitch that AI will never figure out. Sure, a computer can generate an image, but it can never replicate her particular brand of creative chaos, technical know-how, and people-first problem solving. Fueled almost entirely by Denim Coffee, she spends her days juggling graphic design, troubleshooting files, coordinating projects, assisting customers, and stepping in wherever an extra set of capable hands is needed. While technology can automate some tasks, Amanda's creativity, adaptability and human touch are what turn projects into successes—she thrives in the spaces between "that's not my job" and "consider it done.”

As the lead of the Print Center Party Planning Committee (PCPPC), she also develops caring, chaotic and creative celebrations that make every member of the team feel Olympic-level valued. She remains a passionate advocate for getting outside, touching grass and protecting everyone’s mental well-being. A devoted animal rescue advocate, Amanda considers the smallest of donkeys her spirit animal and dreams of one day sharing her home with an army of goofy senior dogs. Bologna is her kryptonite, and lunchtime is at 10 a.m.

Krista HanleyKrista Ulmen

Associate Director of Design & Print Services
ulmenk@dickinson.edu
Phone: 717-245-1060

Krista is tasked with the impossible job of corralling our creative staff into actual productivity. Thankfully, her phone and email skills are legendary; she handles clients with the kind of smooth professionalism and dulcet tones usually reserved for luxury helpline operators. Krista tackles mind-numbing paperwork so beautifully that our academic standards stay flawlessly high.

When she isn't working, she is dedicated to her cat, Star Wars and Lady Gaga—having attended so many concerts she might technically be a backup dancer by now. As a proud aunt, her bragging rights outpace any proud mother. As a new homeowner, she has constructed a replete rolodex of repair contacts, which is handy, because her skin is usually bruised from walking into walls with her eyes closed. We try to tell her to slow down, but her fast-paced brain isn't buying it.

The best days at the Print Center are when Mandy (officially Amanda #3) comes to play. Mandy attacks massive printing tasks with the focus of a thousand monks. She measures 10 times, cuts once and documents the entire process on a scrap of paper. The only drawback of Mandy's fascinating fixation on her work is it renders her unable to speak. Not to worry: She can listen to any stories you may tell.

Mandy is also our resident, non-certified rogue primary care physician, out-diagnosing WebMD daily by recommending specific blood tests and fierce patient self-advocacy. As a founding member of the PCPPC, she puts in hours of unpaid overtime crafting office decorations and greeting cards. Mandy will always welcome you with a bright smile and a pen, ready to write a hyper-detailed list on a 4x4 sticky note which may end up laminated for future reference. Thanks to her relentless questioning of authority, she has single-handedly improved Print Center accuracy by exactly 67.333% (a metric only she can verify, because absolutely nothing gets by her).

Kurt SmithKurt Smith

Assistant Director of Printing Technology
smithku@dickinson.edu
Phone: 717-245-1960

As grandfather of the PC family, Kurt is the most wizened. His many, many, many years of experience make him the official Paper Master whose magic fingers can identify most any printing material blindfolded. His main duties include advanced droid operations and maintenance; he is the only person that "Genny" (XiGen5Press) will respond to on command consistently.

As a true polyimpressario, Kurt has mastered every single job in the shop—even if he preemptively delegates most of them. His house is heavily fortified by Legos and swords. His dog is his person and may be smarter than most. His clocks are all broken and only add to the clutter. If time were on his side, he would build a massive Viking ship and sail away to Norway.
