Book description: In Totally Radical: Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Environmental Justice, Ian Boucher explores how the half-shell heroes rose to become representatives for a generation confronting pollution and climate concerns. First self-published in 1984 and quickly exploding into comics, cartoons, toys, and blockbuster films, the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles were themselves products of human-made environmental disaster. Their origin story—mutation by toxic ooze—placed them at the heart of late-twentieth-century anxieties about contamination, industrial waste, and ecological collapse. The Turtles’ amalgamation of influences made them a unique reflection of environmental justice in a green media ecosystem.
