Democracy in Motion: A Dance Concert
As a nod to America’s 250 birthday, the Dickinson Department of Theatre & Dance and Dance Theatre Group presents Democracy in Motion, an evening of fierce and stunningly beautiful dances that channel the energy of American modern dance. The centerpiece for the concert will be a major reconstruction of Martha Graham’s iconic Panorama. Choreographed in 1935, Panorama was a call-to-action made in response to the rising tide of fascism in Europe. This large ensemble piece is filled with strident and complex stepping patterns requiring the dancers to collaborate, coordinate and cooperate in real time to successfully perform the work
Other works on the program include choreographies by Amanda Chesnut, Adjunct Professor in Dance trained in Graham technique, Erin Woods Burke, Senior Lecturer in Dance in collaboration with the students of the Fundamentals of Choreography course, and a revival piece based on the ecstatic dances of The Shakers, by Director of Dance Sarah Skaggs.
