Drop into the Paz Center Gathering Room on Wednesday morning at any time from 9:30-11:30 AM to network with alum John Costango '93, an executive leadership and career coach.
John Costango '93 Professional Bio: John Costango, PCC graduated from Dickinson in 1993 with a double major in English and Mathematics. He currently works as an executive leadership and career transition coach. John resides in Raymond, ME, with his husband, an artist. Prior to coaching, John built upon his Dickinson education to pursue a variety of roles, first as a high school math teacher in suburban Philadelphia, then as an actuarial consultant and reinsurance risk underwriter, before moving to Wall Street in 2003. As a structured credit banker during the 2008 financial crisis, John participated in several credit crisis management efforts at JPMorgan. John credits his success in his work related to the purchase of failing Bear Stearns, the $25B liquidation of bankrupt Lehman Brothers collateral and the defense of JPMorgan’s mortgage-backed securities litigation not only to analytical and quantitative skills, but even more so to creativity, curiosity, and communication foundational to a Dickinson liberal arts education. As John approached his 50th birthday and evaluated his life and career so far, he realized he had the opportunity to make another big change and set himself up for meaningful work for the next 20+ years. As a gift to himself, he quit his banking career and opened himself to reinvention, again. He thought back to the parts of each job he had found most purposeful and rewarding and quickly realized there was a common thread running through the disparate parts. Working with individuals on the cusp of a personal or professional transformation always excited him and gave him energy. Why not consider a job like coaching where that interaction is core to everything we do? That insight led John to the Hudson Institute of Coaching in Santa Barbara, California and to becoming a Professional Certified Coach by the International Coaching Federation. In his role as a coach, he has had the privilege of working with dozens of clients from industries as diverse as finance, legal, engineering and orchestral music; aged from their early 20's to their 60's; working in large, multi-national companies, and in small partnerships. In common, they all share a desire to push themselves to develop into better versions of themselves, a willingness to do the work that coaching requires, and a belief that they are ready now. He looks forward to connecting with anyone who is prepared to make that investment in themselves.
