Ethics Symposium, "Friction Forward: Considering Cases Involving Courage and Conflict"

November 14, 2024

This year, the Ethics Symposium will feature dinner, a keynote by Amy Nauiokas (‘94), and several five-minute student presentations with time for small group discussions.

It is not uncommon to hear members of the Dickinson community describe themselves as “conflict averse.” Some may think addressing conflict is impolite. Others may assume that all conflict is violent. This year, the Ethics Symposium, “Friction Forward: Considering Cases Involving Courage and Conflict,” will feature dinner, a keynote by Amy Nauiokas (‘94), and several five-minute student presentations with time for small group discussions. The students will present case studies (historical or contemporary) that involve a person, community, or organization demonstrating courage when faced with conflict. What does this case teach us about the potential value of learning to address conflict in our moral lives? Why might it be dangerous to promote positive thinking and artificial harmony when we fear the discomfort of conflict? Students may focus on cases involving the successful navigation of conflict or cases that offer cautionary tales of failures due to excessive conflict avoidance.
