How has Dickinson prepared you for life after graduation?

Through discussions in the senior seminars, Dickinson prepared me to be a responsible developer and user in this 4.0 era. I became aware of social aspects of technology and how they can impact society. I had a chance to explore different problems in the tech field, such as ethics, blockchain technology and responsible AI. In general, I believe I can learn technical skills by myself, but all these insights can just be learned through the process of reading, discussing and self-reflecting in every of my seminar class.

What are you most anticipating about your career or post-graduate pursuits?

I only hope I can find a team that I feel comfortable to work with. I know different companies, different teams have their values and missions. Then, I wish I am good enough, or maybe lucky enough, to finally find one.

What are some of the defining moments of your Dickinson experience?

To be fair, I always consider myself a freshman at Dickinson. Since I am a transfer student, I only have had two years at Dickinson. Unfortunately, my junior year was online. However, I was lucky enough to have a community where all my CS friends were willing to share their experience, knowledge. I finally had a job offer thanks to their support.

Internship Experience

RRD at Thurmont, Md. I was hopeless to find an internship for my summer 2021 and found this opportunity during the pandemic. Even though the role was Perl/Python developer, I learned a lot since my mentor put me in different stages of production. I had a chance to speak with senior developers who had different career paths. They inspired me a lot. What I learned was that as long as you had good soft skills and solid foundation, you can flexibly move around in the industry. At some point, we can find the job/team that we are comfortable with.

How has Dickinson prepared you for life after graduation?

Dickinson gave me an opportunity to try myself in different areas of study and ultimately major in something I have never studied before college. Throughout my time at Dickinson, I have learned how to be more courageous and persistent, put myself outside of my comfort zone and try to do things that I am not good at. I have also developed supportive and meaningful connections with my peers and professors that helped me grow as a person and learn about computer science and other fields of study.

What are you most anticipating about your career or post-graduate pursuits?

I am excited to start working in the industry and contributing to the product that is used by millions of people daily. I also hope that my skills and knowledge will improve significantly as I will be able to focus on my programming skills full-time.

What are some of the defining moments of your Dickinson experience?

Choosing to major in computer science despite getting the worst grades in the related courses was the most defining moment of my Dickinson experience. Computer science was a challenging major, and I probably would have an easier time doing anything else, but it is a decision I do not regret. It also led me to co-found the Girls Who Code Club on campus to help and support other girls who are studying or interested in computer science.

Internship Experience

After my junior year, I worked as a software engineer intern at HERE technologies. I was working on the team that developed maps for autonomous cars. My work was mostly focused on sorting and analyzing HTTP errors, writing code for geospatial calculations and collaborating with senior engineers on the main algorithm for grouping lanes together.

How has Dickinson prepared you for life after graduation?

Dickinson has prepared me in a myriad of ways. They have helped me discover my passion, overcome my fear and anxiety, face challenges head-on and power through life.

Working with a team that has a strong sense of community and are willing to help me and teach me new things. I also hope that our interests align because I want to work on projects that I am deeply passionate about.

What are some of the defining moments of your Dickinson experience?

Working as the technology assistant at the Trout Gallery, tutoring students during my QRA/help room sessions, being a part of CCLA and going on a service trip to South Carolina, leading the Student Alumni Association as the co-president of the organization and most importantly, building friendships that will last forever. I am grateful to all my friends who have helped me and supported me through my Dickinson journey.

Internship Experience

I interned as the technology assistant for the Trout Gallery, which is the art museum of Dickinson College. During the internship, I worked on the configuration and maintenance of the gallery management software. This includes application design, data and database management, issue detection and resolution and technical writing. However, designing the app was my favorite part of the internship, because it taught me a lot about system design and architecture. It also helped me understand the relationship between users, designers and developers of an application, which I thought was pretty cool. Overall, I am very appreciative of this experience because I got to interact with so many people at the Trout Gallery, and it introduced me to many new techniques and technologies.

What are you most anticipating about your career or post-graduate pursuits?

I am excited to continue my studies in mathematics and computer science. Despite the fact that my Ph.D. program is in mathematics, I will be able to utilize my computer science expertise, namely coding skills, in my research work. I expect the path ahead to be difficult, and it makes me nervous just thinking about it. However, it is this aspect of my graduate studies that intrigues me. I am convinced that what Dickinson has prepared me will be a tremendous asset in supporting me in reaching success in the coming years.

What are some of the defining moments of your Dickinson experience?

  • Working on a collaborative mathematics research project with two advisors.
  • Making good friends in my majors' department, computer science and mathematics. One of the finest memories I have is hanging out with them to attend departmental and college activities.
