Tinseltown Has Competition

Kevin Sanson, expert on global mobile film production, will give the lecture, “Location, Location, Location: Hollywood’s Precarious Mobility,” on Wednesday, March 29, at 7 p.m. in the Stern Center Great Room.

Sanson will discuss how the expansion of resources and technology has unseated Hollywood as the sole destination for movie and television production. Atlanta, Vancouver, London, Glasgow and Prague have emerged as prominent production locations. He will explain why location managers are more critical with their insight on new productions hubs and the hiring of local crews. Sanson will argue this global approach to the filmmaking industry has created a new economics of film production and a new culture of international crew workers.

Sanson is a lecturer in the creative industries faculty at the Queensland University of Technology in Australia. He is a founding member and current managing editor of Media Industries, the first peer-reviewed, open-access journal for media industries research. His research focuses on the complexities of screen-media production with an emphasis on working conditions and practices of local hires in global-production hubs. Prior to working at the University of Queensland, Sanson was the research director of the Carsey-Wolf Center’s Media Industries Project at the University of California, Santa Barbara. He is co-editor of Voices of Labor: Creativity, Craft, and Conflict in Global Hollywood; Precarious Creativity: Global Media, Local Labor; and Connected Viewing: Selling, Streaming, & Sharing Media in the Digital Era.
