Welcome to the Russian Department webpage. If you came to Dickinson to engage the world, studying Russian, one of the world’s most widely spoken languages, is a good start.

The Russian Department at Dickinson offers its students a wide range of courses, from elementary to advanced Russian, as well as courses in Russian literature, culture, theater and cinema. Recent course titles include Russia and the West, Russian and East European Film, Tolstoy in the 21st Century, and Russia Today. Russian major curriculum is designed to prepare students to meet the challenges of the contemporary world, while still preserving the traditional emphasis on language and literature. Dickinson students often combine Russian major with International Studies, History and International Business and Management.

Russian majors and minors have an opportunity to study one or two semesters with Dickinson in Moscow program designed to provide not only linguistic and cultural immersion, but also give opportunities for internships and research. Dickinson in Moscow is affiliated with  the Russian State University for the Humanities, one of the most prestigious and innovative universities in Russia.

Russian department alumni have successful careers in business, government, law and academia. They often work for international organizations and companies; many live abroad – in Russia, England, China and Germany. A large percentage of Russian alumni go on to graduate schools. Seven recent Russian department graduates have been honored prestigious Fulbright Research Scholarships to Russia and former Soviet republics. They often say that Russian major helped  them to achieve their professional goals .

Russian Department is a small and closely tied community of students and faculty  who are passionate about Russia and Russian culture.  Students have an opportunity to attend the weekly Russian table and the Russian film series, as well as participate in field trips to New York City, Baltimore, and Washington, D.C. to experience Russian music, theatre, and art. Students can also participate in the Russian Club and attend guest lectures.
