Inaugural Victory

The Dickinson men's soccer team took to the Phyllis Joan Miller Memorial Field for the first time Saturday afternoon and came away with a 2-1 win over visiting Johns Hopkins University.

"The team and I have been eager to have the opportunity to step out onto the new field to play a game," said Men's Soccer Coach Brian Redding. "It creates a tremendous amount of excitement for the game, but for me, it also creates an elevated sense of pride surrounding Dickinson soccer and [the school's] commitment to athletics in general."

"Having such a nice facility makes us feel like we have a lot more to play for and that we need to meet higher expectations," said Derek Kachadurian '14.

Shepherd Waldenberger '13 put Dickinson's first goal on the board just after the intermission, but the Blue Jays soon matched it. With the score knotted at 1 with just 1:51 remaining in regulation, Kachadurian scored on an assist from Javier Mena '14, breaking the tie and propelling the Red Devils to the inaugural victory.

"Scoring such an important goal, which not only won us an important game but also got our season back on track, was great for giving me a boost of confidence that I hope to carry for the rest of the season," Kachadurian said.

"Earning a win for the day was critical," said Redding, "because it was a very important conference win and because it was the first game ever played in the new complex. Getting a win in the inaugural game will be a historic memory for me and the team."
