How has Dickinson prepared you for life after graduation?

Dickinson has shown me how to advocate for myself. If I didn't learn early on in my undergraduate degree to ask or seek opportunities I never would have discovered this skill.

What are you most anticipating about your career or post-graduate pursuits?

I am planning to pursue a Ph.D. and planning to move abroad to be in the area of my academic passion.

What are some of the defining moments of your Dickinson experience?

Living and making friends with likeminded people who I know will be lifelong friends. I have enjoyed the community and passion that my departments have given me.

Internship Experience

Cumberland County Historical Society.

Hannah Hillegas

Hometown: Boswell, Pennsylvania
Majors: classical studies, anthropology, archaeology
Graduate School: University of York
Field of study: funerary archaeology

How has Dickinson prepared you for life after graduation?

Dickinson has prepared me for life after graduation by granting me the proper training I need to pursue a career in archaeology. My majors allowed me to take courses that mimic situations I will experience out in the field. I now have the training needed to properly conduct an archaeological excavation and apply my interpretation skills to producing academic publications.

What are you most anticipating about your career or post-graduate pursuits?

I am very excited to continue my studies in an area that is so rich in archaeology. York has an intensive archaeological history in which students are encouraged to study. This program has everything I was searching for in a postgraduate course and will provide me with the specializations I need in the field.

What are some of the defining moments of your Dickinson experience?

Some of the most defining moments of my Dickinson experience come from my professors and departments. I was able to create some professional and personal connections with my professors, which not only aided me in my undergraduate career but will also support me in my postgraduate studies. I enjoyed the array of courses they offered and appreciate them pushing me to produce stronger and holistic analysis.

Internship Experience

I have worked as an educational intern for a local historical French and Indian Fort in Ligonier, Pennsylvania, Fort Ligonier, for the past two years. I'm charged with creating and assisting the annual children’s summer camp while maintaining the historical context of Fort Ligonier. My initial tasks included working with my co-worker to create educational summer camp activities for kids that taught them about the historical importance of Fort Ligonier and its role in the French and Indian War. I worked with the administrators of Fort Ligonier to recreate the archaeology dig activity in order to teach children about the importance of archaeology. I completed an array of tasks, including the proper maintenance of reenactment clothing and equipment and the handling of artifacts. As a result of my previous work ethic, I was tasked with managing and supervising each of the educational summer camps. This required me to once again closely work with my co-worker to create the camp curriculum and educate elementary age children on the historical importance of Fort Ligonier. I expanded on my previous work with the archaeology dig activity by teaching the children the importance of museum studies and archaeological methodology. I was also able to expand my community engagement by working with local Pittsburgh community members from Fort Ligonier’s sister site Braddock’s Battlefield as well as archaeologists from Juniata College.

How has Dickinson prepared you for life after graduation?

My most meaningful experience is with RDSN and the freedom I have received to pursue my goals. I have gained numerous hours and games of broadcasting experience and have also been able to follow baseball specifically, try podcasting, edit videos, etc.

What are you most anticipating about your career or post-graduate pursuits?

The opportunity to narrow in. I studied classics here and I had a great experience, but my career goals shifted through my time with RDSN. Going to graduate school will allow me to focus on the passion I found here at Dickinson.

Internship Experience

I was a broadcaster for the Pittsfield Suns. I worked primarily as a color commentator and my responsibilities included pregame interviews, postgame recaps, the on-air call and more.

How has Dickinson prepared you for life after graduation?

The Department of Classical Studies has guided me immensely during my time at Dickinson, both in the classroom and outside. They were always people I could rely on for advice and have helped me navigate what grad school will be like. The Department of Music has also reminded me to take time for myself and to do things that bring joy to my life and to others, which is something I plan to continue to do.

What are you most anticipating about your career or post-graduate pursuits?

I am excited to pursue my master’s and to hopefully contribute original research to my field of study. I am also excited to be a part of a bigger campus, as it will be a different experience.

What are some of the defining moments of your Dickinson experience?

Without a doubt Infernos a cappella. This group has become a second family, and there are very few moments in my time here at Dickinson that do not include them.
