Delaney Koch ’20
Delaney Koch ’20 is making the most of her Dickinson experience—inside and outside of class. From exploring seagrass beds, coral reefs and mangrove forests in Turks and Caicos to interning in Dickinson’s advancement division to sharing her experiences as a Global Ambassador, she’s given it her all. And she’s grateful for the people in all corners of campus who’ve helped her along the way.

Biology and educational studies.
Clubs and organizations:
Infernos a cappella group, Alpha Phi Omega, Student Alumni Association, Senior Class Gift Drive and Global Ambassadors.
Favorite book:
The Autobiography of Gucci Mane.
Favorite movie:
Moonrise Kingdom.
Favorite class:
Vertebrate Biology with Professor of Biology Chuck Zwemer is my favorite class so far. I loved this class because of how interconnected the laboratory and lecture portions were and how much I gained appreciation for the complex systems that allow organisms to thrive in their environments.
Favorite place on campus:
Morgan Field in the spring!
Favorite Dining Hall food:
Jen’s apple cake.
On studying abroad:
I studied abroad in the Turks and Caicos Islands through the School for Field Studies. My favorite part of the experience was the opportunity for hands-on learning. I had the opportunity to explore seagrass beds, coral reefs and mangrove forests and learn about the importance each of these ecosystems have in the productivity of our world’s oceans.
Little-known hobby/talent:
I can knit!
If I could have dinner with anyone, living or dead, it would be …
… probably Christina Martinez, the head chef and co-owner of the South Philly Barbacoa. Not only is she famous for her amazing barbacoa, but she’s also an activist for immigrant rights in the U.S. and has had an incredible life journey.
The best thing about my Dickinson experience:
Honestly, the people. Dickinson has introduced me to so many incredible people who have motivated and challenged me along the way. I can’t imagine a college experience without such kind and helpful office staff, caring professors, passionate classmates and friends to lean on when things get tough.
Most important thing I’ve learned so far:
It’s something I’m definitely still working on, but when you find yourself just going through the motions of everyday college life, it can be easy to forget how fortunate we actually are to be here right now. One time I read about replacing the words “have to” with “get to” when talking about things we spend our time on. Instead of “I have to go to class” try, “I get to go to class,” because a lot of people might not have that opportunity.
