Pioneering Abstraction
Art historian Linda Dalrymple Henderson '69 will deliver a lecture about Wassily Kandinsky, a Russian painter known for innovative theories and abstract art, on Tuesday, Sept. 24, at 5:30 p.m. in Room 235, Weiss Center for the Arts. The lecture is free and open to the public.
The talk, “Wassily Kandinsky’s Pioneering Abstraction in its Early 20th Century Scientific/Occult Context,” focuses on Kandinsky’s great 1913 painting, Composition VI, and his pursuit of “the spiritual in art” in the context of new paradigms of matter and space suggested by scientific discoveries of his day.
Henderson is the David Burton, Jr., Centennial Professor in Art History at the University of Texas at Austin. After graduating Dickinson, she went on to earn a Ph.D. from Yale University. She also has served as curator of modern art at the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston. Henderson is a Guggenheim Fellow and the author of multiple books, journal articles and essays.
