Students explore Norwich, U.K., and the University of East Anglia through flagship program

Dickinson College’s Dickinson in England study-abroad program, a partnership with University of East Anglia (UEA), provides in-depth academic and cultural experiences to students—including those who major in subjects that do not traditionally allow for long-term study-abroad experiences.

"Dickinson has really great abroad programs that make it really easy to take classes in your major,” says Lexi Valentin '20. “As a math major, I wanted to be sure that I was able to take classes that fit toward my degree requirements at Dickinson.”

Students can select courses from a variety of UEA departments in the humanities or sciences as well as two or three Dickinson core courses taught by on-site Dickinson faculty. And because all classes are taught in English, they are able to take high-level courses, side by side with native and fellow international students.

UEA has a world-leading research group in climate research, rigorous science classes and an exceptional creative-writing program, to name just a few, and as a medieval city, rich in history and culture, it’s a treasure trove for history buffs. “I couldn’t pass up the opportunity to live in a place that has such history and culture, especially since it relates to my major,” says Joey Bautista '20 (medieval & early modern studies).

Research and extracurricular opportunities abound, and students are able to take advantage of educational excursions and all that this historic and vibrant coastal English city has to offer. They also have an option to live in campus housing with English students or in an international residence hall.

“There’s a very rigorous, very powerful academic program that offers everything across the humanities and sciences,” says John MacCormick, associate professor of computer science, who is teaching in Norwich this year. “And it’s been a revelation to me, having the opportunity to go to many places of cultural, historical and scientific importance. It really brings to life the things that we can study in books and discuss in the classroom.”
