Dickinson College to Host Discussion on Regional Homelessness

Addressing Issues of Contemporary Homelessness

by John Adeniran '19

Dickinson will host a panel of community leaders who will discuss issues surrounding homelessness in south-central Pennsylvania and their efforts toward finding solutions. “Unveiling America: Addressing Issues of Contemporary Homelessness” will take place Thursday, Feb. 28, at 7 p.m. in the Anita Tuvin Schlechter (ATS) Auditorium.

According to the Housing Alliance of Pennsylvania, more than 16,000 Pennsylvanians are known to be homeless on any given day. These estimates rise when those who are between temporary housing situations are considered. The four panelists will give insight into the various initiatives and programs that combat homelessness through intervention and assistive services. Jim Hoefler, professor of political science and coordinator of the policy studies program at Dickinson, will serve as moderator. Hoefler has served on UPMC Pinnacle Carlisle’s Biomedical Ethics Committee since 1993. He also volunteers with Domestic Violence Services of Cumberland and Perry Counties.

Panelists:

  • Christina Kapp is the coordinated entry regional manager for the Central Valley Regional Homeless Advisory Board and is the vice-president of the Cumberland-Perry Local Housing Options Team.
  • Beth Kempf is executive director of Community CARES, which provides shelter to about 70 men, women and children each night in Carlisle.
  • Scott K. Shewell is president and CEO of Safe Harbour, which provides housing and supportive services for individuals who are currently, or are at risk of, experiencing homelessness.
  • Tim Whelan is executive director of the Cumberland County Housing and Redevelopment Authorities. The two organizations lead operations of rental assistance programs in Cumberland and Perry counties; operation of public housing programs; development and management of multi-family, special needs and homeless housing programs; community development and/or redevelopment activities and programs.

The program is sponsored by the Clarke Forum for Contemporary Issues and co-sponsored by the Churchill Fund, the departments of English, American studies, religion, sociology and the health studies program. It is part of the Clarke Forum’s Leadership in an Age of Uncertainty series.
