Alum's Firm Designs Nets' New Home
Christopher Sharples '87 recently helped bring to life the 675,000-square-foot Barclays Center, home of the newly christened Brooklyn Nets. The arena is part of the proposed $4.9 billion Atlantic Yards Project, and it was designed by SHoP Architects, Sharples' award-winning firm. Opened to the public on Sept. 28, the Barclays Center officially houses the first professional sports franchise in Brooklyn since the Dodgers disembarked for Los Angeles in 1957.
Sharples earned a fine-arts degree from Dickinson and a master of architecture from Columbia University. He has taught at the Parsons School of Design, the Yale School of Architecture and the Graduate School of Architecture, Planning and Preservation at Columbia, among other institutions. Sharples is a founding principal of SHoP Architects, which was established in 1996.
