New Trout Gallery exhibition explores gun culture

“Unloaded,” an exhibition exploring issues surrounding guns in American culture, will be on display at The Trout Gallery, Weiss Center for the Arts, 240 W. High St., from Nov. 2 through Feb. 16. The gallery will host an opening reception on Friday, Nov. 2, from 5 to 7 p.m. The exhibition and reception are free and open to the public.

“Unloaded” is a multimedia group exhibition that presents a number of perspectives on the image and impact of guns in contemporary culture. Works by 22 artists examine a host of issues surrounding access to and use of firearms, across demographic categories. The exhibition includes paintings, sculpture, photography and other media and has traveled to more than a dozen locations across the nation since 2015.

“We look at material that is relevant to contemporary discussions,” said Phillip Earenfight, Director of The Trout Gallery. “The visual can provide a nuanced, subtle and multi-layered response to issues,” said Earenfight, adding the exhibition is a starting point for conversations about firearms and the issues surrounding them.

“Unloaded” is curated by Susanne Slavick, artist, curator and the Andrew W. Mellon Professor of Art at Carnegie Mellon University. Slavick notes the exhibition is focused on “the role that guns continue to play in our national mythologies, suicide rates, individual and mass murder, domestic violence, and the militarization of civilian life.”

The Trout Gallery hours are Monday-Saturday, 10 a.m.-4 p.m. For more information, call 717-254-8159.
