Dickinson Hosts Series Celebrating the Art, Activism and Scholarship of Women of Color

"A Kaleidoscope of Excellence" series brings journalists, authors, jazz singers to campus

The Popel Shaw Center for Race & Ethnicity (PSC) is hosting a yearlong series of programs called "A Kaleidoscope of Excellence: Celebrating the Art, Activism and Scholarship of Women of Color" and focused on the experiences and contributions of women from historically underrepresented communities in a variety of fields, including intellectual production, community organizing/social activism and the performing arts.

The transformative potential of intersectionality has taken on a more prominent role in contemporary discourse about social justice and issues of equity, inclusion and access in a variety of fields including higher education, public policy and community organizing. The broad support of the 2017 Women's March and the reinvigorated conversation about sexual misconduct has also drawn increasing attention to the unique experiences of women and female-identified people in the United States.

"The Popel Shaw Center is committed to communicating to female students of color that they matter," says Vincent Stephens, director of the PSC in a recent post published on the Landis House blog. "We see you, we recognize you, and we want the community to see you. This means engaging the campus with the contributions of a distinguished group of artists, scholars and writers whose ideas and contributions are not always visible or appreciated."
