Sherwood
“Dutch” Kepner’s 27 years of service (1969-1996) as an equipment
manager for the athletics department were defined by his cheerfulness
and his dedication to sports.
Known for his easy smile and sense
of humor, Kepner left an indelible impression on all of the athletes
with whom he worked. And because he also worked for the Washington
Redskins during summer training camps at the college from 1969 to 1994,
that list of athletes and coaches includes some pretty big names. A
diehard Redskins fan, Kepner had plenty of stories of interactions with
NFL legends Joe Theisman, John Riggins, Sonny Jurgensen and Vince
Lombardi.
“If the Skins want anything special,” he told the Patriot-News in a 1989 profile, “they know where to find it.”
The
same was true for the Red Devils, who always found in Kepner a ready
solution to any special equipment challenges. Even after his knees made
lining fields nearly impossible, he continued to perform the task with a
smile in a specially modified golf cart.
A 1953 graduate of
Boiling Springs High School, where he made a name for himself on the
gridiron as a standout running back, Kepner was a lifelong football,
baseball and basketball enthusiast. He is survived by wife Lois, son
Sherwood, daughter Cindy and several grandchildren—and he will be
remembered by generations of Red Devils for his dedication, service and
friendship.
