Dickinson’s Director of Event Planning and Holland Union Building Dottie Warner recently received the Jack Thornton Distinguished Service Award, the highest honor bestowed by the Association of Collegiate Conference and Event Directors – International (ACCED-I). Presented during the association's 38th annual conference, the award recognizes "distinguished service, devotion and dedication to the collegiate conference and events profession and to ACCED-I."

Warner has been a member of the association since 1988 and acts as a mentor to younger and/or newer members. Having served as the association's regional director-elect, regional director, board member, treasurer, awards committee chair and more, Warner recognizes that the effort she’s put in to the association comes back to benefit her tenfold.

“I feel I have received so much from ACCED-I," she says. "I have been able to travel all over the U.S. and Canada to attend our annual conferences, where I have been able to gather information on new industry trends, information on new technology and hear some very dynamic speakers who have inspired me to be a better person at work and at home. But the most important thing I have received from ACCED-I are the colleagues who have become dear friends. Those friendships mean the world to me. I feel I’ve given a lot to the association, but not near as much as it has given me.”

The award is named for Jack Thornton, one of the founding members and past president of ACCED-I. He was best known by his peers for his service, devotion and dedication to the collegiate conference and events profession and to the association. Nominees must meet the following criteria:

  • exhibit strong leadership, visionary and mentor qualities
  • possess strong professional ethics and principles
  • and contribute in positive ways to furthering the goals and objectives of ACCED-I.
