On the Edge of Glory

Toni Ortega '18 is no stranger to multitasking. In addition to the work she does as a campus recruitment intern at NBCUniversal, she is also building her network to help her find a career.

Toni Ortega '18, NBCUniversal (Universal City, CA)

Majors:

International business & management, policy management

Internship title:

Campus recruitment intern.

How I got this internship:

I got this internship by networking with Dickinson alumni, faculty, staff and parents.

What I do, day to day:

One of the best things about working on the campus team is that each day is different. I’m responsible for assisting the cable entertainment recruiter with sourcing college students for the next internship term, overseeing our social media accounts, organizing events, and preparing bi-weekly newsletters. I’m also working on two projects outside of my daily duties that will improve our training and social media presence.

Other internships:

I’ve had an internship every summer since my first year—each in HR/recruitment. My first internship was with Manhattan Vibe Collective in New York, then last summer with FRESH Digital Group, also in New York. While on campus my sophomore year, I interned with the Office of Admissions as their Diversity Recruitment intern.

Most valuable part of this experience:

Informational interviews! NBCUniversal has a very supportive culture and encourages everyone—whether it be interns or full-time employees—to schedule informationals with others in the company. For me, it is a great way to learn more about various marketing positions and meeting people in the company outside of my department.

Advice for students considering internships:

Use your network and share your passions and interest. I know that everyone says it, but it’s probably the best advice I was given. Instead of asking our friends, family and professional contacts for internships, I encourage others to instead speak with them about your goals. More often than not, those conversations can lead to them giving a contact who can better direct you to your goal and expand your network.

How this internship has helped me:

Being at NBCUniversal, I’ve learned that attention to detail and communication are key to any environment. As I finish up my senior year, I hope to use those skills—more specifically communication and mentorship—to help direct my peers and better my leadership skills as the Vice President of Trendsetters.

Post-Dickinson plans:

What a loaded question! I have so many interests, like event planning, marketing, and recruitment, so I’m in the process of figuring out which will be my career. Ideally, I would love to score a position as a project manager where I can oversee all aspects of projects and continue growing towards being an account manager.
