Elevation Training Mask
Video by Joe O'Neill
As part of an independent study, biology students are researching and analyzing the Elevation Training Mask to determine its effectiveness and just how it affects its wearer’s physiology. Students have rigged a meter to the device to measure oxygen, carbon dioxide levels, air flow and resting heart rate. Then they test the mask’s effectiveness by having trained athletes wear it while running on the Biddle Field track.
“Bringing very highly talented students into the research lab, outside of the classroom, where we can actually add to the building of their knowledge is very important, not just for their experience but to move the field forward,” says Chuck Zwemer, associate professor of biology, who is overseeing the project.
