A record 173 students who have been admitted to or are enrolled in the class of 2019 visited Dickinson for the Class of 2019 Preview Day on Thursday, Feb. 26. This was an opportunity for students to meet other accepted students and spend the day immersed in the Dickinson community.

After registration and a light breakfast, the students and families picked up their free T-shirts and packed the Anita Tuvin Schlechter (ATS) Auditorium for opening remarks by President Nancy Roseman and Provost and Dean Neil Weissman.

“We are excited to see you and feel your energy and see your excitement for Dickinson,” Roseman began. “This day is all about helping you see who we are. We want you to know us and get a sense of what it’s like here.”

Weissman used his time to elaborate on the kinds of relationships that students will develop with their faculty over time. “Our students are working with people who care deeply about them and will go out of their way to make things possible for them,” he said. “And our students are incredibly ambitious, but not in a way that inhibits them from collaborating with each other. They are strong academically, and they have a lot of heart.”

Joyce Bylander, vice president for student development, and Brenda Bretz ’95, associate provost for curriculum, followed up with remarks related to life at Dickinson, including illustrations of the layered support offered to all students and an explanation of Dickinson’s innovative approach to a liberal-arts curriculum.

Students then headed to the Holland Union Building to join with current students meeting representatives from more than 40 academic programs at the Academic Open House, while parents remained in ATS for a presentation by Phil Jones, dean of career development and assistant vice president of student life, on helping their students plan for the future.

The day continued with lunch in the Dining Hall, campus tours and a closing reception. At the end of the day, everyone had made new friends and new connections to the community that awaits them when they arrive on campus in August.

Additional campus-visit programs for admitted and enrolled students will be held throughout March and April (find details and register via the Applicant Portal), and invitations are being sent for receptions across the country.
