Faculty Success Center Programs

Faculty Learning Communities

Thanks to a generous gift from Joseph and Shirley Eberly, the Norman M. Eberly Multilingual Writing Center in collaboration with the Faculty Success Center hosts a yearly Faculty Learning Community (FLC). A Faculty Learning Community is a group of 6-8 faculty from across the disciplines who meet together to discuss a pedagogical issue that involves writing as either topic or medium. FLCs meet for two hours in August, September, October, November, January, February, March, April and May. During the spring semester, the FLC hosts a guest speaker and holds a dinner reception.

The purpose of the FLC is to foster a culture that values the teaching of writing as a tool to learn and to communicate. Participants in the FLC will:

  • read about evidence-based teaching practices and pedagogies;
  • discuss and explore evidence-based practices and pedagogies with colleagues across the disciplines;
  • apply evidence-based practices and pedagogies to teaching;
  • consult with and incorporate the feedback of trained student pedagogical partners (WAs, QRAs, PAs) participating in the FLC as they revise their courses and assignments.

Past FLCs have focused on the following topics:

  • Writing about Wellness: Unraveling Faculty Burnout (AY 2023)
  • Critical Language Awareness (AY 2022)
  • Digital Reading and Writing (AY 2021)
  • Writing in the First Year Seminar (AY 2020)
  • Writing with Numbers (AY 2019)
