Steps for Admission

Admission Steps to Education Program

Prior to Submitting Application:

  • Complete the Declaration Form for Education Minor (if you have not done so previously) and submit to the Education Department Chair.
  • Complete 48 semester hours (12 full-credit courses).
  • Complete 2 mathematics courses. (Quantitative Reasoning courses, a score of 560 or above on the SAT II Math Level 1C assessment, and AP Math credit may be used in fulfilling this requirement - documentation required).
  • Complete one English composition and one English literature course. (First-Year Seminars and writing intensive courses count as English composition. Literature courses that have ENGL prefix as well as AP English credit count as English literature.)
  • Complete or be enrolled in EDUC 221 Educational Psychology.
  • A minimum cumulative grade point average of 2.8 is required at the time of application for admission to the Education Program. In order to be recommended for certification a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.0 is required by graduation.

Submitting Formal Application for Admission to the Teacher Certification Program Requires:

  • Application form (PDF fill-in form version)
  • Three faculty recommendations. (Please use the Recommendation for Admission to Teacher Education form.) At least two of the recommendations must be faculty members in your major. The faculty references must return the completed form to the student for submission. If the student has waived his/her right to see the recommendation, the faculty recommender must place the recommendation in a sealed envelope with his/her signature over envelope flap BEFORE returning to the student.)
  • Student Teacher Information form (pdf fill-in form using Adobe Reader). Install a free copy of Adobe Reader.   Note: The form cannot be saved if using Adobe Reader; therefore, please print two copies (one to submit to Professor Nesslerodt; the other to keep for your records).
  • Education and Certification Area Checklists
  • Submit qualifying scores for Pennsylvania on the PRAXIS I (if taken prior to April 2, 2012) OR the PAPA (if taken after April 2, 2012).  This testing includes the Reading, Writing, and Mathematics modules.  (If going abroad, these tests must be taken PRIOR to your abroad semester since it is not possible to take while abroad). You should plan to take these tests while in EDUC 221 or upon completion of EDUC 221.  View testing requirements.

Student must apply to and be accepted into the program at least one semester prior to the planned Professional Semester.

It is essential that students spending a semester or year abroad submit all application materials prior to leaving since long-distance communications are often difficult. All applications materials must be submitted by:

  • May 3, 2013 for enrollment in Professional Semester in Spring, 2014
  • December 6, 2013 for enrollment in Professional Semester in Fall, 2014
  • May 2, 2014 for enrollment in Professional Semester in Spring, 2015
  • December 12, 2014 for enrollment in Professional Semester in Fall, 2015
  • May 1, 2015 for enrollment in Professional Semester in Spring, 2016
  • December 11, 2015 for enrollment in Professional Semester in Fall, 2016
  • May 6, 2016 for enrollment in Professional Semester in Spring, 2017
     

Note to Students Studying Abroad: If you have been abroad, you must fill out the Enrollment in Another Institution Form available in the Center for Global Study and Engagement office, x1341, and have an "Official Transcript" from your school abroad sent to the Dickinson College Registrar's office to have your grades transferred. You must do this immediately upon returning to the U.S.

To formally apply to the Teacher Certification Program, please schedule an appointment with the Director of Teacher Certification, Prof. Pamela Nesselrodt, nesselrp@dickinson.edu, to discuss the process. Please email the Director with several times you are available. The Education Department is located at 57 S. College St. across the street from Drayer.

This checklist of items along with ALL application materials must be submitted directly to: Professor Pamela Nesselrodt, Director of Teacher Certification, to be checked in and reviewed. If packets are incomplete, they will not be accepted and will not be reviewed.
