Assessment

Assessment at Dickinson College

Dickinson College is committed to an active and vibrant assessment program across campus, in order to ensure continuous improvement in educational quality and institutional effectiveness.  These efforts allow the leadership of the college to identify strengths as well as areas for improvement, and to make informed decisions about curriculum development and resource allocation, as well as offer accountability and transparency to a wide range of stakeholders.

The Office of Analytics & Institutional Research is involved with accreditation, program evaluation, and assessment of student learning outcomes, with the goal of improving student outcomes and institutional efficiency and also ensuring that we meet the standards of accreditation. Our office offers assessment support for individual projects, courses, and larger initiatives. Through the development of metrics, rubrics, and other evaluation tools we can help you understand whether programs or activities are achieving their desired outcomes. Please reach out to Darren Glass in the AIR Office to begin discussing questions or concerns regarding assessment and evaluation projects.

Academic Assessment

All academic departments at Dickinson College have developed learning outcomes for their program that are specific and measurable, and that focus on what students will know or be able to do at the end of their completion of the major, stand-alone minor, or certificate.

Most recently, in the Spring 2024 semester the departments were tasked with revising the learning outcomes for any major in their department and having these approved by the Academic Programs and Standards Committee. Certificate programs and stand-alone minors were also encouraged to create or revise their learning outcomes.

Administrative Assessment

In order to ensure that Dickinson College is always looking to improve both the quality and the efficiency of our processes, all administrative units have developed goals that are clearly stated, connected to the ongoing mission and strategic initiatives of the college, and assessed regularly.  Most importantly, units and the college leadership are expected to reflect on the results of these assessments and use them for planning and resource allocation.

In Summer 2024, each administrative unit was asked to craft a mission statement and develop several goals that they will assess during the coming year.  In future years, units will be asked to report on these assessments as well as update their goals and mission statements.

Strategic Plan

Dickinson College has developed a new strategic plan, based on a series of challenges and opportunities that all feed into the common goal of providing students an education that is unsurpassed in its value and that prepares graduates for lives of purpose and success.
