FaculTea: Sherry Harper-McCombs - "In Front of the Shadow: Modern Takes on a Traditional Performing Arts Form"

April 3, 2019

Refreshments will be served.

We tend to associate Indonesia mostly with the country’s more traditional forms of shadow puppetry such as wayang kulit, wayang klitik, or wayang golek. Indonesia, however, has a very vibrant contemporary art scene and puppetry is still an important and lively part of the arts in Indonesia. Puppetry has moved beyond traditional objects and the telling of traditional stories into the world of addressing modern issues and concerns in creative and constructive ways. Professor Sherry Harper-McCombs will share some of what she learned during a residency in the spring of 2018 with Papermoon Puppet Theatre, an internationally acclaimed troupe from Jojgakarta, Indonesia. Attendees will also see a bit of what she, Professor Karen Kirkham and students Solomon Zisser, ’20 and Josh Bennett, ’20 created and performed in Indonesia for Pesta Boneka, an international festival of puppet performance held in October of 2018.

About the FaculTea Series:
A FaculTea is a brief, informal presentation about a faculty member’s research or a subject of interest. FaculTeas are popular with faculty and students and provide a chance for the entire community to learn about the richness of research activity at the college outside the classroom setting. FaculTeas also provide a unique opportunity for faculty members to interact with college and Carlisle community members they may not otherwise meet.
