Join renowned food historian Jeffrey Pilcher as he explores how beer-making traditions and beer consumption have evolved around the world—from a home-brew beverage to a global commodity dominated by varieties of Pilsner lager. Pilcher will share the results of his recently published global history of beer Hopped! How Travel, Trade, and Taste Made Beer a Global Commodity (2024). Discover the fascinating story of how beer changed as it circulated around the globe together with international commerce, migration, and imperialism as well as how taste and consumption patterns have changed over time, including the recent return to artisanal practices and local flavors.
Jeffrey Pilcher is Professor of History and Environmental Studies at the University of Toronto. He is the author of numerous books on the history of food and foodways, including ¡Qué vivan los tamales! Food and the Making of Mexican Identity (1998), Food in World History (2006), and Planet Taco: A Global History of Mexican Food (2012) and editor of the Oxford Handbook of Food History (2012) and the journal Global Food History.
Light refreshments will be served (doors will open at 4:15PM for refreshments, the talk will take place 4:30 - 5:30, and guests are invited to stay afterwards for more refreshments, until 6 PM).
