This recital features Vytautas Kiminius (birbyne), Emmanuel Borowsky (violin), Cecylia Barczyk (cello) and Elizabeth Borowsky (piano).
Lithuanian musician Vytautas Kiminius showcases the unique sonorities of the birbyne in a program featuring classical and Lithuanian compositions. Joined by pianist Elizabeth Borowsky, violinist Dr. Emmanuel Borowsky (Dickinson College), and cellist Cecylia Barczyk, this concert offers a rare opportunity to experience the beauty and versatility of this traditional instrument.
The birbyne is a traditional Lithuanian wind instrument with humble origins. Historically crafted from materials as varied as wood, bark, horn, straw, and even goose feather, the birbyne was originally a simple shepherd's tool. Over time, it evolved into a more sophisticated instrument, influenced by classical instruments like the clarinet. Modern birbynes are typically made of wood with horn bells and feature a more complex design, allowing for greater musical expression. Despite its evolution, the birbyne retains an emblematic haunting timbre that sets it apart.
This concert is sponsored by the Truman and Beth Bullard Music and Culture Series.
