The 2024 Whitfield Bell Lecture in History with Prof. Marcelo Borges

April 16, 2024

Dickinson history professor Marcelo Borges will deliver this year's Bell Lecture, "Leaving Home, Longing for Home: Nostalgia and the Migrant Experience."

While migration can evoke images of opportunity and new beginnings, it can also evoke images of painful separations from home and familiar cultural markers and spaces; such separations often lead to the reshaping of identities.  Migration can also bring to mind the attempts to control people's movements that have manifested as open arms for some groups, but closed doors for many.  Using nostalgia as a primary lens, this year's Bell Lecture will explore how emotions have been mobilized both by migrants themselves to explain their choices and to fashion new ideas of self, and by external observers to explain migrants' lives.  Drawing on a variety of migration experiences from the late 1800s to the early 2000s, Marcelo Borges will show how today's globalized world was largely shaped by migration.

Free and open to the public.  Refreshments will be served.
