Ally Day at the 2023 Women of Color Summit

March 5, 2023

Ally Day is a part of the fourth-annual Women of Color Summit.

Allyship entails an active practice of unlearning and re-evaluation of the self and external environment, in which a person in a position of privilege and power maintains solidarity with a marginalized group. The 2023 Women of Color Summit Planning Committee is calling you into community and requesting your participation in Ally Day, March 5, during our fourth-annual summit. Engagement from allies is an integral part of the summit. We hope you’ll join us, in person or online, for the workshop that best fits you. We highly encourage in-person attendance. However, livestream links will be sent to registered attendees who are unable to join us in Carlisle on March 5.

Ally Day at the 2023 Women of Color Summit
Sunday, March 5
Session One: My Sister’s Keeper: Serving as an Ally to Women of Color
10–11:30 a.m.
Holland Union Building Social Hall
This session is open to all Dickinsonians who identify as people of color, and it will be facilitated by representatives of MANdatory, an academic-enrichment and leadership-development program for male-identifying students of color at Dickinson. The focus of the discussion will be on what allyship between men and women of color looks like, and ways to collaboratively work on allyship at Dickinson. A small selection of breakfast items will be available starting at 9:30 a.m. for participants who attend this workshop in person.

Session Two: Performative Activism & Intent vs. Impact
11:30 a.m.–12:30 p.m.
Holland Union Building Social Hall
This session is open to all Dickinsonians, and it will be facilitated by Himeno Yamane ’22. The focus of the discussion will be on the difference between intent and impact in allyship and how individuals who hold positions of privilege can avoid performative activism while they work collaboratively with women of color to make Dickinson more inclusive, equitable and welcoming for all.
Registration is free. If you plan to attend, please register no later than Wednesday, March 1, at 3 p.m. If you are traveling from out of town and plan to stay in Carlisle, please visit Dickinson’s “Where to Stay” webpage for more information on local area accommodations.
