The Construction of Morocco as "Other" in Nineteenth Century Italian Travel Literature: The Case of Edmondo De Amicis.
Professor Luigi Cepparrone analyzes the book Morocco, published in 1876, after the renowned Italian novelist accompanied the first Italian ambassador to the court of Mulay Hasan I. The image of Morocco that emerges from the text is ambivalent: it is at the same time the image of barbarism and exoticism. Backward but also fascinating and desirable, a symbol of a mythical past that the process of European modernization is rapidly erasing.
