This talk explores the continued relevance of Dante’s "Divine Comedy" by looking at it through the eyes of men and women who read the poem in prison.
Ron Jenkins, Professor of Theater at Wesleyan University, has facilitated theater workshops inspired by Dante’s Divine Comedy in prisons in Italy, Indonesia, and the U.S. A recipient of Guggenheim and Fulbright Fellowships, he is spending 2022-23 at the Yale Divinity School’s Institute of Sacred Music where he will be collaborating with formerly incarcerated rap poets and Gospel musicians on a play that reimagines Dante’s poem from the perspective of women in prison. This lecture is co-sponsored by the Dickinson Italian Department and the Italian Consulate of Philadelphia.
