September 20, 2022

Tobias Rüther will discuss the challenges, pitfalls, and excitement involved in writing the first biography of Herrndorf with access to his Nachlass.

Wolfgang Herrndorf (1965 - 2013) is one of Germany's most well-known and bestselling authors. His novel Tschick (Why We Stole the Car) sold three million copies and became a staple of German high school curriculums almost instantly. With novels that range in topics from teenage car trips (Tschick) to desert detective novels (Sand), Herrndorf's works highlight adventure, memory, language, and colorful characters. Tobias Rüther will discuss the challenges, pitfalls, and excitement involved in writing the first biography of Herrndorf with access to his Nachlass.

Tobias Rüther is a journalist and an editor for the major German-language newspaper Frankfurter Allgemeine Sunday edition, for which he is currently in charge of the section on literature. He has published two books that rely heavily on biographical material: Heroes: David Bowie and Berlin University of Chicago, 2014 (Helden: David Bowie and Berlin, Rogner & Bernhard 2009) and Männerfreundschaft: Ein Abenteuer (Rowohlt 2013).
