Did you ever wonder what happens to the barley that's left over after beer is made?
Join Matt Steiman, College Farm livestock operations manager, to learn about an exciting research project— converting spent grain from Carlisle's own Molly Pitcher Brewing Company into burnable gas, via a microbial process called anaerobic digestion. This lab project provides research experience for six Dickinson students from three academic departments and generates data that will be of use to farmers and brewers everywhere! In 2022, with support from the EPA and USDA, the College Farm will construct a commercial-scale biogas digester that will process all of the food waste from campus, grain from Molly Pitcher and manure from a neighboring dairy farm into gas for electricity generation. This presentation will explain the science of anaerobic digestion, the grain research project and the future of waste-to-energy at the College Farm. This event will be hosted via Zoom.
