Nature and Artifice: The Pictorial Revolution of the Carracci From Bologna and the Beginning of the Italian Baroque In Bologna, in the second half of the 16th century, the Carracci, a local family of well-known painters, gave a new impetus to art mixing classical models with a modern sense of reality. This webinar will follow the creation of their new pictorial language through a virtual journey from Bologna to Rome, inside the palaces they frescoed. Under the vault of the Farnese Gallery in Rome, Annibale, the youngest member of the Carracci family, completed the research he had begun years before in Bologna with his brother, Agostino, and his cousin, Ludovico. In Bologna, they had worked together on the scaffoldings of important palaces, experimenting with a new pictorial style based on the study of the effects of nature and artifice mixed together into a single illusion. It was in Rome, in the Farnese Palace, that the effects of that aesthetic research “reduced to silent stupefaction the spectator,” as written by scholars of the time. The vault of the Farnese Gallery, with its impressive and sometimes mocking variety of painted gods and goddesses, marble statues and frames, bronze medaillons and Ignudi, is a display of scenographic theatricality, a prelude to the Roman Baroque.
