Julia Olson

Rose-Walters Lecture

Tuesday, February 26, 2019 |  7 p.m. – 8:30 p.m.
Anita Tuvin Schlechter Auditorium (ATS)

Our Children's Trust, the 2018 recipient of the Sam Rose ’58 and Julie Walters Prize at Dickinson College for Global Environmental Activism, elevates the voice of youth to secure the legal right to a stable climate and healthy atmosphere for the benefit of all present and future generations.

Julia Olson, executive director of Our Children’s Trust, will give a public lecture in ATS on Tuesday, Feb. 26, 2019, at 7 p.m. that will draw from Our Children’s Trust’s experience leading a global climate recovery campaign, elevating the voice of youth—those with most at stake in the climate crisis—to favorably impact their futures through advocacy, public education and civic engagement. Our Children’s Trust has gained national attention for supporting 21 young people (one of which is a Dickinson student) who have brought a landmark federal lawsuit against the president and multiple federal agencies. They argue the federal government’s affirmative actions supporting fossil fuel development and consumption violate the plaintiffs’ constitutional and public trust rights.

Come hear about the journey Julia, Our Children's Trust and these young people have been on as they take on the president in multiple levels of simultaneous trials.

Tuesday, February, 26 |   1 – 3 p.m.
Allison Hall Community Room

RSVP to: sustainability@dickinson.edu

In this workshop, through review of the constitutional climate lawsuit Juliana v. U.S. and the science and principles behind it, participants will learn how to effectively educate their community about climate change and climate solutions and empower themselves and others to take bold action through civic engagement and activism.

We are limiting the registration to about 30 students, faculty and staff (with waiting list) for this free on-campus workshop. Please RSVP to sustainability@dickinson.edu if you would like a space in the workshop and save the date for yourself. We ask that you are available for the entire workshop to register.

Eowyn Soran is the trial outreach coordinator at Our Children’s Trust. Growing up in Oregon, she developed a love for the unique beauty of the Pacific Northwest. Raised in a climate change-denying community, Eowyn first learned about the impacts of climate change on Oregon’s landscapes during her sophomore year of college. Upon this discovery, Eowyn took time off of school to become involved in climate activism and plans to complete her B.S. in environmental studies at the University of Oregon with a focus on climate policy and resiliency strategy. At Our Children’s Trust, Eowyn works as an organizer and educator, leading outreach to faith communities, students and environmental organizations.
