What are some of the defining moments of your Dickinson experience?

Working in a professor's lab elevated my experience at Dickinson because I was able start translating what I had learned into real laboratory skills. It came with new challenges and forced me to adapt but it was an incredible learning experience that made me feel much more prepared to graduate college and begin working.

How has Dickinson prepared you for life after graduation?
 
Dickinson has taught me how to critically think and how to express myself and present myself efficiently to others. I have learned great networking capabilities here and how to successfully manage time due to the rigorous demands of classes here.

What are some of the defining moments of your Dickinson experience?
 
There are so many defining moments for me at Dickinson, but some that stick out to me are getting to work in Visiting Professor of Neuroscience Meredith Rauhut's lab, and getting more hands on experience. Going abroad was very transformational for me, as I got to do work with a Ph.D. student there and explore postgrad research. Getting to work with the Cumberland Country Prison and coordinating with the staff there on their library project was also very transformative and meaningful to me.

How has Dickinson prepared you for life after graduation?

I have gained so much insight into a career in academia from my research advisor, Assistant Professor of Chemistry Colin Rathbun. Not only is he responsible for training me in a lot of the wetlab techniques I know, but he has also taught me a lot about the road to becoming a professor. He has been nothing but encouraging as I applied for various fellowships and graduate school programs—he read over my application materials, helped me talk out all my options, and instilled confidence in me when I was overcome with imposter syndrome. I have also learned a lot from Prof. Rathbun as an educator. The way he approaches teaching and his commitment to helping his students succeed are values I want to adopt when I become a professor in the future. Because of his mentorship and that of other faculty and staff members at Dickinson, I feel prepared for my future after graduation.

How has Dickinson prepared you for life after graduation?
 
Dickinson has allowed me to receive a well-rounded education by having the opportunity to engage in courses centered on my neuroscience major, while also having the ability to participate in courses within the Department of Women's, Gender & Sexuality Studies and Department of Spanish & Portuguese Studies for my Spanish minor, to name a few, which have broadened my perspective and knowledge as a student. Moreover, my health studies certificate has allowed me to understand the significant role that sociocultural and environmental factors play in science and shaping one's health and understanding the significance and role of intersectionality.
