Majors: biology, computer science
Hometown: Lutherville Timonium, Maryland
Graduate School: Johns Hopkins University
Field of study: bioinformatics
Employer: GeneOne Life Science

Job Responsibilities

GeneOne has not yet titled my position, but I will be working under Joel Maslow, their chief medical officer. The specific project he has mentioned I would start with is computational analysis and data research related to the expression of the hormone HER2 in certain types of breast cancer, which will (hopefully) ultimately lead to drug treatment for this type of breast cancer.

How has Dickinson prepared you for life after graduation?

Dickinson has done well to prepare me to learn throughout my life. I believe the ability to adapt and understand problems and situations is equal in importance to the content I learned in my courses at Dickinson. Research in the biology department was likely one of the most useful things I did during my time in Carlisle. I was given real problems without solutions and asked to work on them and to make progress in my own way. It was much more rewarding than a traditional class and had a huge impact on the way I approach problems. I also think it is worth highlighting the value of the extracurricular activities I participated in. My time in the Student Senate was transformative and helped me to understand how to conduct myself in a professional setting, address difficult situations and ultimately helped to lead to the start of my career.

What are you most anticipating about your career or postgraduate pursuits?

I am very thankful for my time at Dickinson, but I am ready to move on to tackle larger challenges both professionally and intellectually. I am very excited to be starting my career working on complex computational biology problems and to see how I will grow and learn from future challenges.

What are some of the defining moments of your Dickinson experience?

As I spoke about above, some of the most transformative moments during my Dickinson experience happened while doing research with Professor Dana Somers and Professor Carol Loeffler in the biology department and during my time as the Student Senate president.

How has Dickinson prepared you for life after graduation?

I feel like a liberal-arts education is more than just getting a degree in a particular major, as it helps you in overall development. I am a computer science and mathematics major, and I was able to use the knowledge I gained from the classes and projects during my internship. However, it was not limited to that, as I had an opportunity to take different classes from different departments, including businesses, and participate in different programs, like the Innovation Competition. Having these opportunities really helped me to understand the dynamics of an organization properly. Also, I feel like I have gained more confidence in talking to people and explaining my ideas to people outside my field.
