“I choose to support Dickinson because it’s provided my daughter, Mychal ’19, with an intellectually challenging liberal-arts education and a strong and vibrant Jewish community on campus. I think Dickinson College is an extraordinary institution of higher learning, and while today I probably wouldn’t stand a chance of gaining admission as a student because of the exceptional students who apply, it would be my dream to be a Dickinsonian.”

Jacob Herber P’19’s daughter, Mychal, was looking for a small liberal-arts college that balanced strong academics with a vibrant Jewish-life program on campus. Dickinson, Herber says, has provided that and much more. A rabbi who serves as the spiritual leader of Milwaukee’s only congregation affiliated with the Conservative movement, Herber preaches, teaches, leads religious services, performs life cycle rituals and represents the Jewish interests in the wider Milwaukee community.

To encourage his daughter’s rich experience and growth at Dickinson, he has supported the college with a John Dickinson Society-level gift to the Asbell Center for Jewish Life.

“Mychal has grown in so many wonderful ways since she’s been at Dickinson,” says Herber, who is a competitive cyclist and plays the guitar in his spare time. “Most importantly, I find her to be an even more educated, informed and thoughtful citizen.”
