“ I believe very strongly in the merits of liberal-arts education and want to help Dickinson be one of the most successful and sought-after colleges in the country.”

Tom Anderson was recruited to play basketball at Dickinson, but what most attracted him to the college was the chance to get a liberal-arts education in small classes. As a student-athlete, Anderson enjoyed playing basketball, building friendships as a member of Sigma Chi fraternity and gaining critical-thinking and communication skills through class discussions and one-on-one interactions with professors.

After graduating with a major in policy management studies, he earned an MBA from the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania and launched a successful 25-year career in investment management. Today, he’s the managing director of intermediary distribution at Manning & Napier Advisors, where he leads a staff handling distribution and client service—work for which Dickinson prepared him well.

“My Dickinson education helped me develop and hone my communication skills, both written and oral,” he explains. “I also believe that Dickinson taught me how to analyze complex topics, develop thoughtful solutions and articulate those solutions to different audiences.”

Outside of work, Anderson focuses most of his time on his family; teenage sons Ben and Chris are heavily involved in sports, and he has enjoyed watching and coaching them over the years. In addition to supporting Dickinson at the John Dickinson Society level, Anderson serves the college as an admissions volunteer and Philadelphia Regional Council member.
