Professor of Biology Scott Boback wanted to study rattlesnakes in Colorado and California, but neither state is exactly in Dickinson’s backyard. So, teaming with CalPoly’s Emily Taylor, a snake biologist and ecophysiologist, he launched Project RattleCam.
The project, featured here on Dickinson's The Expert Show, is a livestream of rattlesnake dens in Colorado and California, allowing the researchers to study the behavior of hundreds of these often skittish reptiles—while also sharing the experience with the public.
The project has been successful in attracting viewers from all over the world—and the eye of media from across the nation, from the Washington Post to NPR.
Boback and Taylor hope to expand the project to other locations in the future and to use the project to educate the public about rattlesnakes and their importance in the environment.
