Columbian American actor, author and poet, Carlos Andrés Gómez, will demonstrate the multifaceted nature of masculinity through poetry and storytelling during a performance at Dickinson. “Reimagining Modern Manhood” will take place Thursday, Oct. 3, at 7 p.m. in the Anita Tuvin Schlechter (ATS) Auditorium.

Gómez will engage the audience with his personal experiences regarding gender and its impact on his views of masculinity as depicted in his memoir, Man Up. His award-winning poetry and acting focuses on transforming societal perception regarding masculinity and the pressure associated with gender norms.

As an actor, Gómez has been featured on DEF Poetry JamVerses and Flow and in director Spike Lee’s film, Inside Man. His written work received the 2019 Fischer National Poetry Prize, the Atlanta Review International Poetry Prize, the Sandy Crimmins National Prize for Poetry and many others. Gómez is also a two-time International Poetry Slam Champion and a graduate of the University of Pennsylvania, where he founded The Excelano Project for spoken word poetry.

The event is sponsored by the Clarke Forum for Contemporary Issues and a civic learning and engagement initiative grant from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation and co-sponsored by the Division of Student Life, the Department of English, the Women’s & Gender Resource Center and the Wellness Center. It is part of the Clarke Forum’s semester theme, Masculinities.
