How has Dickinson prepared you for your future?

I honestly feel like I could go and do anything from here, because of how Dickinson has prepared me. In my time here, I have found my voice as an academic, an activist and an ally. I have learned what I am truly passionate about and how I want to focus and work my passion into my career. I feel prepared by Dickinson in that I can confidently speak my mind and talk about making change. I can write well and can think of solutions to problems. I can be creative with ideas and planning. I have friendships that I know I can count on in the future.

Internship Experience

Summer, 2017, I had an internship at Women Organized Against Rape (WOAR) in Philadelphia. I became a certified rape crisis counselor and worked the hotline every day, counseling victims and survivors through their traumas and giving them further information about steps they can take to get more help. I also got to accompany my supervisor to court and advocate for a survivor who was giving her testimony, which was amazing.

What are you most anticipating about your future?

I anticipate a hopefully exciting career and eventual graduate school career. I want to do so much with my life, and I know this is only the beginning. I am excited to do work that I am passionate about and to hopefully make differences in the communities in which I work.

What are some of the defining moments of your Dickinson experience?

  • Definitely the day I declared my major as women's & gender & sexuality studies.
  • All seven service trips I went in which I participated.
  • Getting to see two drag shows hosted by Dickinson!
  • Being awarded the Ally Award my sophomore year by the Office of LGBTQ Services.
  • Going to New York City with the Department of Women's & Gender & Sexuality Studies seeing The Color Purple on Broadway for free!
  • Studying abroad in Cameroon spring semester of my junior year.
  • Doing my creative writing independent study with Professor Claire Seiler.
  • The countless late nights hanging out with friends, laughing and making the best memories together.

Leah Miller

Job title: Disney College Program intern

Job Responsibilities

I will be an intern at Walt Disney World Resort and will work in attractions while taking classes with leaders within the Disney company.

How has Dickinson prepared you for your future?

Dickinson's liberal-arts education has given me a foundation to question the world around me and constantly pursue new lines of inquiry. Through this education, I have developed skills in communication, critical thinking and creative problem solving that have become assets when transitioning into "life beyond the limestone."

Internship Experience

  • Vera House Inc. in Syracuse, New York: I worked for a nonprofit organization whose mission is to end domestic and sexual violence. I joined the education team and traveled to different colleges and high schools to teach students how to be empowered bystanders and how to identify domestic and sexual violence. I also compiled information about Title IX to give to victims of sexual assault on campuses.
  • Institute for Human Performance in Syracuse, New York: I interned as an assistant for a psychological study and aided participants throughout the process.

What are you most anticipating about your future?

I am excited to take the knowledge and skills I have developed at Dickinson and apply them to the world around me postgraduation. I will continue to pursue thoughtful dialogue and hone my critical thinking skills in my postgraduate pursuits to achieve my goals of effecting positive change.

What are some of the defining moments of your Dickinson experience?

Each of the defining moments of my Dickinson experience has come from the community around me. Engaging with professors and peers and participating in thoughtful dialogue has not only helped me understand the content at hand but also to communicate with others to truly unpack and analyze a theme or idea. Through these engaging dialogues, I have grown a deep appreciation for my fellow Dickinson community members and the importance of collaborative learning.
